Turned down a $2,400 tax refund advance from a storefront in Newark, waited 6 weeks for the IRS instead
Last February I walked into one of those pop up tax places near me in Newark and the guy behind the desk offered me a refund advance on the spot, $2,400 in my hand that same day for a $180 fee. I said no and filed free online instead. My actual refund hit my account 6 weeks later, all $2,400 of it, not a penny less. My cousin took the same offer across the street and ended up paying $340 total between the fee and the higher prep cost. That $180 sounds small until you do the math on what it costs per week to borrow your own money for 6 weeks. I get why people take it, rent does not wait, but I will never hand over a cut of my own refund again. Has anyone here run the numbers on those advances and found a case where it actually makes sense?
