Hostel private room vs shared dorm, I finally did the math
Spent 4 nights in Lisbon and picked a 6-bed dorm for 22 euros a night instead of a private room at 55. Sure, I saved 130 bucks total, but I woke up to someone's alarm at 5 AM every single day and had to guard my charger like it was gold. Has anyone else hit that tipping point where the savings just arent worth the sleep anymore?

Recheck the math. 4 nights at 55 is 220, and 4 nights at 22 is 88. That's 132 saved, so you're close. But you're also forgetting the other costs. The dorm locker fees, the earplugs you bought after night two, the coffee you needed after the 5 AM alarm. Those add up. If you value your sleep at even 5 bucks a night, the private room is barely more expensive. You didn't just pay for a bed. You paid for the noise and the worry. Next time, do the math on what your sanity is worth.
