Question about the metal detector I almost left in the box, and what finally got me to take it to the beach
Six months ago my sister gave me a $120 metal detector for my birthday and I stuck it in the garage because I figured it was a toy that would just beep at bottle caps. Then a coworker mentioned he found a silver ring at Ocean Beach in San Francisco after a storm rolled through, so I drove out there on a Sunday morning with low hopes and 40 minutes of patience. The first 20 minutes were exactly what I expected, pull tabs and a crushed can, and I was about to pack it up. Then I got a clean signal near the north end and dug up a 1943 mercury dime about six inches down, which honestly isn't worth much but felt like a small lottery win. I went back the next three weekends and found two more silver coins and a brass buckle. So now I'm the guy with a detector in his trunk at all times, which I swore I'd never be. My question is for anyone who does this regularly, do you wait for low tide or just hunt the dry sand, and is a pinpointer really worth the extra money?
