The grow light timer I trusted for 4 years was confusing my seedlings

Ever since I swapped to a cheap smart plug with sunrise simulation in March, my basil and tomatoes in Portland doubled in size, so has anyone else ditched their old mechanical timers after realizing the sudden on/off was stressing the plants?

Honestly, I wonder if people just overthink this stuff. Sure, sudden light changes might be a tiny shock, but plants in nature deal with clouds and shadows all the time, so is a light flipping off really that big a deal?
