Update: tried mirror welding the root on a 6 inch pipe in Baton Rouge, night and day vs walking it
Spent 3 months walking the cup on every 6 inch root pass because that is how the guy who trained me in Baton Rouge did it, and I kept getting lack of fusion on the bottom side every single time. Switched to mirror welding a few weeks back on a boiler tube job and my reject rate went from 4 out of 10 to maybe 1 out of 10, mostly because I can actually see the puddle keyhole instead of guessing. Anyone else here made the switch late like me, or am I the last guy on the crew holding a mirror?
