My friend swore by the 'no rules' first game night and it was a disaster

He said to just hand out pieces and let people figure it out for a game of Root. We spent 90 minutes in total confusion before someone rage-quit. What's the worst piece of board game advice you've ever gotten?

wesleyb20's group got lucky with a simple game, but that approach would still bomb with anything heavier than Monopoly lol.

From my own game nights, I've found that starting simple helps everyone get on the same page. We eased into a heavier game like Scythe after a few rounds of Ticket to Ride, and it went way smoother than expected. The basic rules explanation gave us a foundation to build on. It's not a guarantee, but it can definitely work better than just jumping into the deep end.

Honestly, that exact approach worked great for my group with a simpler game.
