My old coal forge finally gave out on me last Tuesday

The firepot cracked right down the middle after about fifteen years of steady use. I had to finish a set of fireplace tools with a borrowed propane rig, which just doesn't get the same heat. What's your go-to fix for a cracked firepot, or is it just time to build a new one?

Oof, that's a tough break. Try a high-temp refractory cement patch first.

Agree, that stuff works great for small cracks. I patched a firebox last year and it's still holding strong. Just make sure to let it cure fully before you fire it up again.

My old wood stove manual said 72 hours for a full cure, and that always worked for me. Gibson.avery is right about waiting, because rushing it just makes the patch fail. Letting it sit that extra day is the key to a lasting fix.
