PSA: the 'free' breakfast at my hotel in Reno was the saddest thing I've ever seen
I stayed at a casino hotel in Reno last month for a work thing and the breakfast buffet was included, so I figured why not. Turns out 'free' meant cold scrambled eggs from a powder mix, stale danishes, and a juice machine that had been broken so long there was a handwritten sign taped over it. I watched a guy in a suit fill his plate twice and tip the server nothing, and I sat there thinking this is exactly how most 'free' stuff works, somebody always pays and it's usually the person serving it. Has anyone else noticed that the word free just means the cost got moved somewhere you can't see it?
Reminds me of a "free" shuttle at a conference I went to where the driver was basically working for tips only. Cold eggs and stale danishes are bad, but stiffing the server on top of it is the real crime here.
