My uncle's advice about painting over wallpaper was dead wrong, cost me $700 in Denver
He swore a coat of primer would seal the seams so I could skip tearing it down, but six weeks later the whole thing bubbled and peeled in the bathroom, and now I have to ask, did anyone else learn the hard way that old-timer shortcuts are just someone else's mess waiting for you?

Skip the primer debate and test a small patch first. I hired a guy who steamed off the top layer and left the backing, then primed that, and it held fine for years in my 1960s ranch bathroom.
