I finally hit 100 job applications in 3 weeks and the number that actually shocked me was 2
So back in January I got laid off from my warehouse job in Toledo when they closed our whole shift. I started applying everywhere, like 6 to 8 apps a night after my kid went to bed. After 3 weeks I counted up my spreadsheet and I had hit 100 applications exactly. Here's the part that got me though, out of those 100 I only got 2 real callbacks, and one of them was for a place that pays $2 less an hour than my old job. I sat at my kitchen table at like 11pm just staring at those numbers and it hit me that this whole job search thing is a numbers game but nobody tells you how bad the odds feel. I've got about 5 months of savings left so I'm okay for now but I keep wondering if I should switch to a totally different field or just keep grinding out apps. Has anyone else tracked their own numbers like this and did changing your approach actually move the needle?
My tracking spreadsheet deserves a gold star for effort while my callback rate deserves a moment of silence. Honestly the numbers game thing is real but 100 apps for 2 calls means something in your resume or your targets is getting filtered out before a human ever sees it. Changing fields might help, but fixing how you apply to the ones you already qualify for could move the needle faster.
