Lost $220 on a torque wrench that failed after 40 uses
I grabbed a digital torque wrench from an online auction site last spring, figured the brand name meant quality and skipped the calibration check. It read fine for a few weeks, then it started clicking way early, I stripped two crank bolts and one seatpost clamp before I noticed the pattern. Anyone else trust a used tool without testing it first, or am I the only one who learned this the hard way?
Yeah I did the same thing with a used Park Tool beam wrench off eBay, no way to calibrate those anyway so I just started checking it against a known weight. Hung a 20 pound dumbbell off the handle at the 1 foot mark and it should click right at 20 ft-lbs, mine was reading like 24 which explained a lot. Took the cover off and there was a little adjustment screw inside, tweaked it until it matched and it's been fine for two years now. You can also just send them out for calibration but that runs like 50 bucks so it only makes sense on nicer wrenches.
