The office party smile versus the layoff letter I wrote

Ten years ago at my tree service I chose to keep us small instead of taking a big landscaping contract. My wife wanted the steady money, my gut said it meant I would have to fire half the crew in winter. I smiled at every family dinner and said we had enough, but I felt like I was gambling with our mortgage, not just a business. The money went to a competitor who went under two seasons later, and my three men still celebrate their anniversaries with me. Has anyone else passed on the obvious win and quietly worried they were just scared, not wise?
