The editor who told me my memoir was too nice

A book editor in Chicago read my 80-page draft and said my memories sounded like a press release, not real life, so I rewrote the chapter about my dad leaving to include the actual screaming match at the Greyhound station. That one change made every other scene feel honest, and suddenly people started telling me their own messy stories after reading it. Has anyone else had a harsh piece of feedback that forced you to write the version you were avoiding?
