My birthday cake for my niece turned into a leaning tower disaster

I was making a three layer chocolate cake for her party in my kitchen last Saturday. The middle layer slid right off because I didn't let the buttercream set enough. I had to quickly shove dowels from a craft store into it to hold it up, and just piled on more frosting to hide the mess. Has anyone else had a layer cake almost collapse and what did you do to save it?

Yeah, @knight.dylan's cold cake trick is a total lifesaver, lol.

My sister's wedding cake started leaning so bad last year I thought it was a modern art piece. I ended up using plastic straws as internal supports, which worked way better than I expected (you just cut them to size and push them through the layers). The real trick was chilling the whole thing for a solid hour before I tried to move it. A cold cake is just way more stable, even if you have to do a last minute frosting patch job.

Ever try wooden dowels for extra support in tall cakes?
