Lost an 8 hour Monopoly game to my niece because I kept making one dumb trade rule
I used to think you could trade properties anytime, even mid roll, because that is how my family always played. So last Christmas in Rochester my 11 year old niece asked for Boardwalk and I handed it over for a dollar plus Baltic Ave, thinking I was being generous. She built hotels on it 20 minutes later and wiped out my whole cash pile while I sat there stunned. Turns out the actual rules say trades only happen between turns, and everyone at the table started laughing when I pulled up the rulebook on my phone. Now I want to know, does anyone else have a house rule they grew up with that turned out to be completely made up?
Man that stings, losing to a kid hurts more when you thought you were being the nice one. My family always let people collect rent while sitting in jail, which I later found out is total nonsense. We also played that landing on Free Parking gave you whatever was in the middle, and by hour six that pile was huge. My cousin once took a pot big enough to buy back half the board and nobody blinked. Kids these days have the rulebook on their phones so there is no hiding it anymore.
