Saw a guy in Portland build a whole patio out of free Craigslist bricks

Last month I was visiting my cousin in Portland and her neighbor was out back laying a patio with bricks he got for free off Craigslist. I sat there with a lemonade watching him for like 20 minutes and he had this little rubber mallet and a level, just tapping each brick into the sand. He told me the whole 12x14 patio cost him about $60 total, just sand and a couple bags of paver base. It got me thinking my plain concrete slab could use a facelift. Has anyone here done a dry laid brick patio? How do you keep weeds from popping up between them?
