Warning: that $30 solar fountain pump is lying to you, got 3 weeks before it died

Bought one of those cheap solar fountains for my pond in Austin last month and it worked great for 3 weeks, then just stopped mid-afternoon and wouldn't restart even in full sun. Anyone else found a budget pump that actually lasts more than a season, or is this just the standard for anything under $50?
