Shoutout to the old guy at the Dallas hangar who showed me the light gun trick
Back when I got my first avionics job at a shop near Love Field, I used to test my VHF com installs by just keying up and asking ground for a radio check. Took forever and half the time I got a "say again" and never knew if it was me or them. Now I use a bench wattmeter and a dummy load to check output power first, then do a quick ramp test, and I caught a bad antenna gasket on a Cessna 172 in about 10 minutes that way. Curious what the rest of you do for com checks before you ever push the plane out the door.
