Torque wrench vs my own wrist, I learned the hard way on a head gasket

I've been turning wrenches for 12 years and always thought I could feel when a bolt was tight enough. Last month I did a head gasket job on my buddy's 2004 Civic and skipped the torque wrench for the intake manifold bolts. Snugged them down by feel, fired it up, and within 20 minutes I heard that sucking sound. Vacuum leak from two bolts I overtorqued and cracked the plastic flange. Cost me 60 bucks for a new manifold and a whole Saturday redoing it. Now I torque everything, even oil drain plugs. Who else here trusts their hands over a torque wrench and regrets it? What job finally broke you of that habit?

You ever strip a bolt and just stand there staring at it, feeling stupid? That was me on a valve cover. Snugged it by feel, snapped it clean off. Took me a whole afternoon with an extractor kit and a prayer. Now I grab the torque wrench for anything that goes into aluminum. Even simple stuff. My wrist was good enough for oil pans and suspension, but engine parts dont forgive. Better to spend two extra minutes than break something that costs two hundred.

My 3/8" torque wrench probably saved my block a dozen times since. Cheap insurance for a cracked ear.
