Rant: I used to hammer bearings in with a socket, now I press every one after what happened to a customer's Tacoma
Ten years back I did a front wheel bearing on a 2011 Tacoma with a socket and a 3 pound sledge. Felt fine driving out of the bay. Two weeks later the guy comes back with a wobble and a chewed up spindle. Cost me $340 in parts and my Saturday to make it right.
Now I keep a 20 ton press in the corner of my bay and I wont touch a bearing without it. I still use the old race driver set for seals and small stuff, but anything that carries load goes on the press with the right plates. Takes me 20 extra minutes and saves me a comeback every time.
What got you to stop doing a job the fast way? And does anybody here still trust the socket trick on anything bigger than a lawn mower?
