Old school timing light vs digital, which way do you teach new guys?
Last month I had a helper who couldn't wrap his head around setting base timing with a dial-back light. He'd rather just plug into the scanner and read the knock sensor. I get it, digital is faster. But 3 years ago I had a customer's 78 F-150 that had a rebuilt distributor installed wrong by another shop. No codes, just pinging. Only way to catch it was the old light and 10 degrees before TDC. The scanner showed zero. So which method do you actually trust for diagnostics, and if you had to pick one for a green tech, what would you teach them first?

Teach both, but warn em the old light also finds your own screwups.
