Appreciation post: the old timer who showed me the right way to set a valve
For years I'd just eyeball the clearance on small engines, but last month a retired mechanic at the swap meet in Daytona watched me struggle and said, 'Kid, you're leaving power on the table.' He pulled out a set of go/no-go gauges and walked me through the proper method, which took an extra five minutes but made the engine run way smoother. How many of you still use the old feeler gauge method versus something more precise?

My grandpa taught me that method in his garage.

Man, that's the real stuff right there. Those garage lessons stick with you way longer than any classroom ever could. It's like the knowledge gets mixed in with the smell of oil and sawdust.

Honestly, the feeler gauge method is plenty precise if you know how to use it right. That extra five minutes with go/no-go gauges is cool, but for most small engine work, a good feel and a clean gauge gets you the same result. Maybe it's just what you get used to first.
