So I tried a DIY ground survey in my backyard and found a weird metal plate
I borrowed a friend's old metal detector, thinking I'd maybe find a few old nails or a coin. After about an hour of scanning, I got a strong signal and dug down maybe 8 inches. Instead of junk, I pulled up a heavy, square iron plate with some worn markings. I showed it to a local history group, and they think it might be a property marker from the early 1900s, which is way older than our house. Has anyone else found something totally unexpected just messing around with basic gear?

That sounds more like a manhole cover or old utility plate to me.

Oh totally, @ellioth37. You just made me realize we're all slowly becoming experts in old city infrastructure without even trying. I swear half my walks are just looking down at the sidewalk trying to figure out what each weird metal plate was for. There's a whole hidden history under our feet, and most of it is just labeled "gas" or "water" with a date from like 1930. It's kind of cool when you start noticing them everywhere.

Man, that is so cool! I get that feeling of just poking around and finding something that makes you stop and wonder. It's like a little piece of the past was just sitting there waiting for someone to notice. Makes you look at your own space totally differently, wondering what else is hidden just out of sight. That has to be a wild feeling, holding something that old from a time before your house was even built.
