I used to read dirt layers like a book, now I let a $600 GPR unit do the talking, which way is right?
Back in college at Ole Miss we mapped a whole Mississippian house with a trowel and a plumb bob, and now I wave a box over the grass in Tupelo and dig where it beeps. Do you trust the machine or the wall profile, and when has one of them flat out lied to you?
Man, this is the same deal as when I quit doing math in my head and just started trusting my phone calculator. Is the machine right or is it just faster? I have seen a GPR miss a whole pit because the soil was too wet and I have seen a wall profile trick me because of a rodent hole. You end up leaning on whatever gives you the answer fastest and then you stop learning the thing that actually teaches you. My grandma trusted her recipe cards over a scale every single time and her biscuits never lied once.
