Vent: the crew lead at the job in Boise made me redo my hinge cuts and he was dead on
We were taking down a big silver maple on a property off State Street in Boise last week and I made my face cut about 3/4 inch too shallow on the first pie slice. I figured it was close enough, but the crew lead stopped me and had me start fresh because he wanted a cleaner hinge on the side lean. Turned out the top came over exactly where he called it, and my shortcut would have barber-chaired on the heavy side. Now I'm rethinking how I check hinge thickness before the back cut. Any of you guys use a gauge or just eyeball it?
