My neighbor's silver maple went from 60 feet of shade to a stump in 8 months
When I moved onto this street in Rochester 3 years ago, that silver maple was the biggest tree on the block, and it shaded both our yards all summer. Last April I noticed a shelf fungus at the base and a dark seam in the bark, and by November it was dropping limbs on the driveway, so the city took the whole thing down. Is there any way to catch root rot earlier, or does that fungus always mean it's already too far gone?
