Sounds like every piece of equipment I've ever run picks the worst possible moment to quit, and somehow it's always when you're already in a bad spot. My mower died mid mow on the steepest part of the yard last summer, same kind of deal. It's like the machine waits until things are as hard as they can be before it gives up on you. Glad you made it down without a real problem.
