Vent: 6 months ago I quit cleaning dryer vents for free on every service call, and my callback rate dropped to almost nothing | Appliance Repairers - Thought Shares
The callback thing makes total sense when you break it down. Free work trains people to expect free work, and once you stop, they feel cheated even though you never owed them anything. What really gets me is how fast the "while you're here" stuff piles up, one little free thing turns into an hour of unpaid labor and they still think they did you a favor by hiring you. I bet your good customers, the ones who pay fair and don't nickel and dime, didn't blink when you stopped. The ones who vanished were probably the same ones who were costing you money the whole time. Losing a customer who only wanted freebies is not a loss, it is a raise. You just found out which calls were actually worth your truck showing up.
