That Sears Parts guy in Phoenix saved my compressor motor swap

I was swapping a 5 ton compressor motor last month and the replacement I got from a supply house had a smaller shaft keyway. Old timer behind the counter at the Sears parts desk in Phoenix said to reuse the old key and shim it with a soda can strip. I thought he was nuts but it seated perfect and ran smooth all week. Anyone else ever improvise with shim stock like that or do you always order the exact fit?
