Can we talk about the 'heat island' effect in my own neighborhood?

I always thought it was just a city planning term until I borrowed a friend's infrared camera and saw my street was 12 degrees hotter than the park three blocks away. Has anyone else had a moment where climate change got this real and close to home?

Got me thinking about how that heat gets stored. All that black asphalt and dark roofing on my street just soaks up the sun all day. Then at night, it's still pumping out heat while the grass in the park cooled off hours ago. You can actually feel it walking from the parking lot to a garden bed. Makes you realize why adding a few trees or some lighter colored concrete isn't just about looks.

Yeah, it's crazy how much that trapped heat adds up across a whole city. You end up with these little heat islands that just make summer nights miserable. No wonder some places are finally painting roofs white or planting more green spaces.

Honestly, did your friend's camera also show your sidewalk trying to fry an egg?
