Vent: My professor said the printing press set us back 200 years and I wasted a whole semester on it
I was sitting in my history seminar at Ohio State last Tuesday when my professor went on a 20 minute rant about how the printing press was a mistake. His whole argument was that oral tradition kept communities tighter and the press just flooded Europe with cheap pamphlets that caused the Reformation wars. I pushed back with the literacy numbers, like how it jumped from maybe 10 percent to over 50 percent in 200 years, and he literally told me I was missing the point. I emailed the department chair the next day asking if this was a legit position or just him being edgy, and she basically said he has academic freedom so nothing would happen. So now I have to write a final paper arguing a side I don't even believe in just to pass. Has anyone else dealt with a professor whose hot take was so off the wall it messed with your whole grade?
