Why does nobody talk about how a $40 used GPU crashed my whole home setup for a week
I grabbed a used 8GB card off a marketplace listing in Austin for $40, mostly to run some small local models for fun, and it wrecked my week. The first night was great, everything loaded fine and I was feeling smart about the deal. By day two the drivers kept dropping and my whole desktop would freeze mid-prompt, so I started chasing it and probably reinstalled stuff five times. Turned out the card had been mined on hard and the memory was flaky, which nobody warns you about. I lost maybe 20 hours of tinkering and almost bought a new power supply for no reason. The thing that bugs me is people online act like cheap local AI hardware is a free lunch, and it is not. What is your actual cutoff for buying used compute, or do you just refuse now?
