Running Whisper on my own box vs renting cloud GPUs, which would you pick
I had a straight choice last week for a small voice note app: run Whisper locally on a $1,200 used PC with a 3060, or pay a cloud provider about $0.60 an hour for GPU time. I went local because I didn't want per-minute bills, and so far it handles a 40 minute recording in roughly 3 minutes. Side A says local wins because no meter is running, no uploads leave the house, and the box pays for itself fast if you use it daily. Side B says renting is smarter because the hardware gets better each year and you never eat a dead card or a failed power supply. I'm honestly torn now that I've heard people say cloud prices keep dropping. Where do you land on owning vs renting for this kind of thing?
