Hot take: my old drag harrow still beats the GPS section control I paid $3,100 for
Three years ago I bought a 12 foot drag harrow at an auction in Sedalia for $450. Last spring I dropped $3,100 on a GPS section control kit for my sprayer because everyone at the co-op told me it would pay for itself in a season.
Here is what happened. The GPS needs a good signal, and half my fields sit in a valley where it drops out. Twice last June it lost position and left a 20 foot strip unsprayed. I found it the next week when the weeds came up in a straight line like someone drew it with a ruler.
The harrow has zero wires, no subscription, and I can fix it in the shed with a pipe wrench. Yeah it covers less ground and I have to watch it, but it never quits in the middle of a pass.
I am not saying ditch your tech. But everybody acts like precision gear is a sure thing and my old iron keeps proving them wrong on my place. Am I crazy for thinking about running the harrow more and the sprayer less next spring? What do you all actually do when the signal drops out mid field?
